What connects Einstein imagining himself travelling alongside a beam of light, the Wright brothers standing in a field believing that human beings could learn to fly, Steve Jobs reimagining what a computer could be, Elon Musk asking why a rocket had to be thrown away after a single journey, and Verghese Kurien placing the future of India’s dairy farmers into their own hands?
They worked in different centuries and different disciplines. Some were scientists, some inventors, some builders of institutions, some entrepreneurs. Yet each of them began with the same quiet, stubborn act: a refusal to accept the world exactly as it was.
Einstein questioned whether our understanding of space and time was truly complete. The Wright brothers looked at the sky and refused to believe it belonged only to birds. Steve Jobs saw computers not as machines for specialists, but as intimate tools that could become part of ordinary human life. SpaceX asked why something that cost millions should burn up after one use. Verghese Kurien, whose own story is told in I Too Had a Dream, helped build a cooperative through which millions of small farmers could finally share in the value their own hands created.
Google began with a problem anyone could understand: as the internet swelled, how would a person ever find what they were looking for? The iPhone asked whether a telephone might also be a camera, a map, a music player, a computer, and a doorway to the world. Amul asked whether millions of small farmers, standing together, could build something more powerful than the middlemen they had always depended on.
None of these stories began with someone saying, “I want to own a business.” They began with questions.
Why must things continue to work this way?
What if a limitation we have accepted is not permanent?
What could exist that does not exist today, and could I be the one to bring it into being?
This is the deeper meaning of entrepreneurship.

MORE THAN OWNING A BUSINESS
Entrepreneurship is often mistaken for owning a business. The two are not the same. Business ownership is a legal and economic condition. Entrepreneurship is a way of seeing, thinking, and acting in the world.
A person can own and run a fine business by following a model that already exists, creating jobs, serving customers, generating real economic value. That contribution is genuine and should never be diminished. But ownership alone does not make an act entrepreneurial. And, just as importantly, the reverse is true: a person can be deeply entrepreneurial inside a university, a laboratory, a hospital, a nonprofit, a cooperative, or a public institution, without ever owning a conventional company at all.
Einstein was not a business owner. The Wright brothers began as bicycle mechanics and tinkerers. Kurien did not set out to sell more milk; he set out to redesign the very system through which millions of people took part in a nation’s economy.
Their lives remind us that entrepreneurship is not, at its heart, about possessing a company. It is about recognising a possibility, acting under uncertainty, and gathering knowledge, people, and resources to bring something new into the world.
The outcome may be a company. But it may just as easily be a scientific tool, a new technology, a social movement, an educational platform, a cooperative, a public programme, an institution, or an entirely new way of looking at an old problem.
Entrepreneurship, in the sense we mean it at FARII, is the disciplined act of creating new value under conditions of uncertainty. It is the journey from zero to one: from an unanswered question to a new idea, and from that idea to something with the power to change how people live, learn, work, or understand the world.
And yet these journeys from zero to one do not belong only to the famous, whose achievements have already hardened into history. They almost always begin quietly, in the life of a single person who does not yet look like an entrepreneur at all.
Two of those people came to us not as founders, but as a boy who had failed a grade and a doctor who feared he had forgotten his mathematics.
WHEN FAILURE BECOMES A BEGINNING
Prathik Ballal’s* journey did not begin with a business idea. It began with failure.
Until Grade 10, Prathik had done well in school. Then he entered an integrated programme in Mangaluru, and he failed Grade 11. The failure did not stay confined to a report card. It shook his confidence, and it placed his family under a weight of quiet social pressure that anyone who has grown up in such a setting will recognise.
It would have been so easy to read that year as a verdict: proof that Prathik had simply reached the edge of his ability. That is how failure is usually understood in conventional education, as a final judgement on the student, rather than as a signal that the environment, the method, or the direction might be what needs to change.
Prathik’s father refused to accept that verdict. He heard about the mentoring work being done in Bengaluru, and he brought his son to us. In time the family moved cities, and Prathik joined our mentoring program.
The first task was not to teach him how to build a company. It was gentler and more fundamental than that: to help him recover his confidence, rediscover what genuinely interested him, and take the reins of his own learning.
As he returned to his studies, Prathik began wandering far beyond the walls of any school curriculum, into philosophy, technology, and the strange new possibilities opening up across the internet. Slowly, something shifted in him. He grew less anxious about proving he could survive inside an existing system, and far more curious about what he might build for himself.
He started experimenting with online advertising and commerce. He sold products on eBay, Snapdeal, Flipkart, and Amazon. What began as pure curiosity grew, while he was still in the twelfth grade, into real commercial activity. He would go on to run two businesses, support a charitable food initiative, advise others on e-commerce, and take his place in the fast-moving world of online retail. The visible outcome was business. But the real entrepreneurial victory had happened long before the first sale.
A young person who had arrived believing that failure had defined him discovered instead that he could enter an unfamiliar field, teach himself what he did not know, take a considered risk, and create something of value in the real world.
Before Prathik built a business, he rebuilt his relationship with himself. That is where his entrepreneurship truly began.
BEGINNING WITH WHY
The entrepreneurial journey often begins with what Simon Sinek calls the “why.”
Why does this problem matter?
Why should the future be different from the present?
Why does this idea deserve to exist at all, and why should anyone give it their time, their trust, their talent?
The why gives an undertaking its soul. Once that purpose grows clear, the entrepreneur must go looking for the how: the research, the experiments, the technology, the collaboration, the sheer perseverance it takes to turn an idea into something real. The eventual product or enterprise is only the what, the visible surface of a much deeper current.
Profit may be necessary for a business to survive, but profit alone can never explain why an idea deserves to exist. It is an outcome, an engine; not, usually, the reason.
“People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it.”
But a powerful why, however moving, cannot be left as a beautiful sentence. It has to meet reality. The entrepreneur must ask whether the problem is real, whether the solution truly creates value, and whether the people they hope to help actually experience the problem the way it was imagined. Purpose begins the journey. Reality disciplines it.
Sometimes the why is present from the very first day. And sometimes it arrives only much later, after a person has followed their curiosity across several fields and let seemingly unrelated ideas quietly find one another.
That is what happened to Dr. Nikhil Rao*.
FROM MEDICINE TO A NEW QUESTION
Nikhil came to us with a completed medical degree and an unfinished question.
He had his MBBS behind him, but what pulled at him now lay somewhere else entirely: in computational neuroscience and machine learning. He wanted to understand how machine learning actually worked, and whether it might shed light on the deepest questions about the brain. There was an obvious obstacle, and he named it plainly at his very first meeting. His training was in medicine, not mathematics. The last time he had studied math was in the twelfth grade, many years ago. It is exactly the kind of gap that talks most people out of ever beginning.
His mentor refused to let it. She reframed the whole thing. He had learned these ideas once, she reminded him, and what the mind has truly learned is not lost; it can be revived, and it often returns sharper than before, carrying a fresh perspective. With the right sequence, real discussion, and steady work, his mathematics would come back to him.
She was right. Within a few weeks Nikhil found himself moving into the material with a surprising ease, and wherever a topic turned genuinely hard, the ongoing conversations carried him through. Once his mathematical footing was firm again, he turned toward neural networks, and now the ideas landed. Backpropagation, loss functions, the principles by which a network learns, all began to make sense, because at last there was solid ground beneath them.
Within two months, Nikhil had learned Python from the very beginning and was building basic neural networks with his own hands. But the technical craft was only ever half of what was happening. Nikhil kept circling back to the brain itself: its structure, its astonishing capacity to adapt, the way cognition and learning and intelligence seem to rise out of living tissue. His mentor pointed him to Jeff Hawkins’s On Intelligence, and the book left him with a larger question: could the brain’s power to reorganise itself help us understand, or even treat, neurodegenerative disease?
He went looking for the answer. He read David Eagleman’s Livewired, with its portrait of a brain that is never fixed but forever rewiring itself. One question opened into the next, the way it always does when a person is truly awake: Ray Kurzweil’s The Singularity Is Near, V. S. Ramachandran’s Phantoms in the Brain, Barbara Arrowsmith-Young’s The Woman Who Changed Her Brain, and more, a widening arc across neuroscience, medicine, and technology.
For several months he read hungrily and thought quietly, sharing only fragments with his mentor. But through those fragments, a direction was becoming visible.
Then the dots connected into a single purpose. He wanted to know whether artificial intelligence could help detect neurodegenerative disease, Parkinson’s above all, earlier than conventional methods ever could. His medical training let him feel the human weight of the problem. His new mathematical and computational skills gave him a fresh way to attack it.
He studied Parkinson’s, the ways it is diagnosed, and the hard truth at the centre of it: by the time traditional methods can see the disease clearly, much of the damage in the brain is already done. He turned his attention to something as ordinary and human as the voice, a signal we produce every day, carrying patterns too subtle for the unaided ear to catch.
Over the following months, with only light guidance from his mentor, Nikhil built a machine-learning model to explore whether those patterns might reveal signs of Parkinson’s earlier than observation alone. It was a research direction, not yet a finished clinical tool. But its meaning lay in the connection he had drawn: medicine gave him the problem, neuroscience deepened the question, mathematics gave it structure, and machine learning offered a way in.
He went on to find others working toward the same goal and to found a start-up around the idea. Once again, the company was not where the entrepreneurship began. It was one consequence of a far deeper journey.
Nikhil’s transformation was not from doctor to businessman. It was from a person defined by the boundaries of his earlier training into a person capable of creating across those boundaries.
“You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.”
TWO JOURNEYS, ONE TRANSFORMATION
Prathik and Nikhil set out from almost opposite corners of the world.
Prathik arrived after a failure had shaken his faith in his own mind. Nikhil arrived after finishing a demanding professional degree, wondering whether the distance between medicine and mathematics had simply grown too wide to cross.
One was still a schoolboy. The other was already a doctor. One walked into entrepreneurship through online commerce; the other through the meeting-point of medicine, neuroscience, and artificial intelligence.
And yet, beneath all those differences, the same transformation took place.
Both began with a limitation they had come to believe was fixed. Both stepped into territory they did not know. Both had to rebuild or construct knowledge rather than wait until they felt fully ready. Both followed their curiosity long before the destination was in sight. Both crossed the quiet but decisive line: from learning what others had already made, to daring to make something of their own.
And most important of all, both walked away with agency: the settled belief that they could face a hard problem, learn what they did not know, gather what they needed, and act without any guarantee of success.
That is why entrepreneurship can never be reduced to starting a company. The venture is the visible structure raised up in the world. The journey is the invisible reconstruction of the person who raises it.
ACTING WITHOUT ALL THE ANSWERS
In conventional education, problems arrive neatly wrapped. The information you need is handed to you, a proven method is taught, and a correct answer already exists, waiting at the back of the book. Entrepreneurship offers no such comfort.
The problem itself may be blurry at first. The information may be missing. The people you hope to serve may be poorly understood. The technology may not work. The resources may run short. An idea that gleamed in the imagination may crack the moment it touches the ground. So the entrepreneur must learn to act without waiting for perfect certainty; not recklessly, but intelligently, beginning with what is actually at hand: their knowledge, their interests, their relationships, and their ability to run one honest first experiment.
A question becomes an investigation.
The investigation becomes an idea.
The idea becomes an experiment.
The experiment yields evidence.
The evidence reshapes the idea.
And through these patient cycles of thinking, making, testing, and revising, something gradually emerges that can survive outside the mind that dreamed it.
This is what quietly transforms a person’s relationship with failure. A failed experiment still stings. But it is no longer a verdict on your worth; it becomes information. A broken prototype teaches you about the design. A user’s rejection exposes a misunderstanding of the problem. A presentation that falls flat shows the idea has not yet been made clear. A wrong assumption becomes an open door to seeing reality more truthfully.
The individual learns, slowly, to separate conviction from certainty: to care deeply about solving a problem without assuming that the first solution must be the right one.
CONFIDENCE, HUMILITY, AND RESPONSIBILITY
Entrepreneurship builds confidence. But if it is real, it must build humility in equal measure. An idea can look flawless while it lives only in the mind of its creator. The world introduces needs, behaviours, constraints, and consequences that imagination alone never anticipates.
So the entrepreneur must listen, absorb criticism, revise assumptions, and admit what they do not yet understand, while, at the very same time, finding the courage to defend an unconventional idea in the long stretch before anyone else can see it. They learn to hold confidence and doubt in the same two hands.
And they discover, often to their surprise, that meaningful creation is almost never a solitary act. The famous stories of Jobs and Musk and Einstein can leave the impression that greatness is the work of a lone genius. The truth is that consequential ideas are carried into the world by communities of people. The entrepreneur must learn to voice an idea, invite others into it, earn their trust, accept help, and work alongside people who know more than they do, turning a private possibility into a shared endeavour. This is why entrepreneurship builds not only independence, but responsibility: to collaborators, to users, to communities, and to the long shadow that any creation casts.
Because the power to make something does not, by itself, prove that it should be made. Every real innovation reaches beyond its intended purpose. And so the entrepreneur must also learn to ask the harder questions:
Who benefits from this?
Who might be overlooked, or harmed?
What happens if it succeeds at scale?
Does it truly solve the problem, and what kind of future will it help create?
Entrepreneurship is not only the responsibility to bring an idea into the world. It is the responsibility to weigh the world that idea will leave behind.
THE DEEPER OUTCOME
The first idea may succeed. It may fail. It may change so completely that it no longer resembles the thing that was first imagined.
But the most important outcome may not be the fate of that first idea at all. It may be the quiet emergence of a person capable of conceiving and pursuing many meaningful ideas across a whole lifetime.
This is the deeper transformation entrepreneurship can work in someone: curiosity without passivity, confidence without arrogance, conviction without rigidity, ambition carried together with responsibility.
Such a person stops asking only which of the existing paths is meant for them. They begin, instead, to ask what they might create for others.
THE JOURNEY AT FARII
At FARII, we set out to nurture both kinds of creation at once: the growth of an idea, and the growth of the person pursuing it.
The journey does not begin with a business plan. It begins with attention. Participants start by observing the world and naming the questions that genuinely matter to them. They dig into the histories, the systems, the people, and the buried assumptions surrounding a problem. They learn to tell the difference between a merely interesting idea and a genuine human need.
Then they move from inquiry to creation. They draw connections across science, technology, economics, design, the humanities, and the social sciences. They shape possibilities, build early prototypes, and test their assumptions against evidence. They sit with the people they hope to serve, and they learn, perhaps the hardest lesson of all, to listen before they try to persuade.
Throughout, our mentors do not simply hand over answers. As Antoine de Saint-Exupéry is so often remembered for saying, “If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up people to gather wood and give orders — teach them instead to long for the vast and endless sea.” That is the work of a mentor here: to help a young person ask a better question, notice a weak assumption, wander into an unfamiliar discipline, and hold steady through the fog that always accompanies original work.
Our purpose is not to hand students a formula for a successful start-up. Transformative ideas do not come from formulas, and entrepreneurship can never be reduced to pitch decks and valuations. Nor do we expect every participant to build a company. One idea may become a scientific investigation. Another may grow into a technology, a social initiative, a cooperative, a creative project, or a new institution. Some ideas will be set aside once the evidence shows they do not work, and even that, understood honestly, is real progress.
What matters is that a young person lives the whole journey: observing carefully, questioning bravely, researching deeply, building thoughtfully, testing honestly, collaborating generously, and acting responsibly.
FARII, then, is not simply a place where students are taught about entrepreneurship. It is a place where curiosity is given direction, where imagination is held up to inquiry, and where ideas are tested against reality.
Einstein teaches us to question what looks certain. The Wright brothers teach us to experiment with what looks impossible. Steve Jobs teaches us to connect the disciplines that others keep apart. Elon Musk shows us the power of refusing a limit of scale. Verghese Kurien reminds us that entrepreneurship can transform not only products, but entire systems and the lives of whole communities.
And Prathik and Nikhil bring all of it home. Their journeys prove that the power to create is not reserved for celebrated founders or for people who seemed extraordinary from the start. It can awaken in a schoolboy recovering from failure, or in a doctor beginning again with mathematics.
Here, young people begin to discover what they might question, imagine, and build. They learn the one truth that changes everything: that the world is not finished, and that they are allowed to help shape whatever comes next.
In setting out to transform the world around them, they quietly begin to transform themselves.
“Stay hungry. Stay foolish.”
Ideas are born here.

Their answer fits in a pocket: two smartphone photographs, one in low light and one in ambient light, analysed by patent-pending image processing and machine learning to estimate risk in seconds. Piloted with Sankara Eye Hospital and taken up there for clinical validation, it brings screening to places no eye clinic reaches, and the idea travelled to the TEDxGateway stage.
